”9" is an homage to Drake’s hometown Toronto (“the 6”) and an assertion of his influence there. Drake uses the number 9 to describe his influence over Toronto, saying he “turned the 6 upside down”—making it a 9. His influence and moves turned the city upside down—this is his anthem to the 6. The song samples “Dying” by reggae artist Mavado—part of the strong Jamaican influence seen throughout this album. Interesting to note that this same sample appears at the end of “Missing You Remix” around the 4:16 mark. “9” was certified platinum by the RIAA on June 29, 2018.
