Bassekou Kouyate est une sommité du ngoni, luth d'Afrique de l'Ouest, instrument qu'il maîtrise avec une modernité hors du commun. Le Malien a en effet bidouillé l'instrument traditionnel, lui ajoutant quelques cordes et le rendant plus flexible, harmoniquement parlant. Il sera accompagné de son groupe Ngoni ba - un quartette de ngonis, deux percussionnistes et la divine voix de sa femme Amy Sacko - qui participe également à son dernier album, I Speak Fula (2010), dans lequel le virtuose marie musique traditionnelle africaine et roots nord-américain.

Bassekou Kouyate is an expert of the ngoni, a West African stringed instrument that he has mastered with an uncommonly modern flair. In fact, the Malian musician retooled the traditional instrument, adding several strings and making it more flexible, harmonically speaking. He'll be accompanied by his group Ngoni ba-a quartet of ngonis, two percussionists and the divine voice of his wife Amy Sacko-who played on his latest album, I Speak Fula (2010), in which the virtuoso blends traditional African music and North American roots.
