Description

As Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine once said, come party with the gypsies, travelers and thieves, the good, bad, average and unique, the grebos, crusties and goths, and THE ONLY LIVING BOY IN NEW CROSS. Here's the first ever Des Was A Bowie Fan late night of dancing and shit-kicking down south, at a steam punk cottage pub, amidst taxidermy "art" of yore, a 1940s diving suit, a mannequin in a gasmask and fishnets, two giant Japanese wrestling masks, a miniature steel circus bike, and a dancefloor sat beneath a bunch of World War I aircraft propellers, with a couple of guests to make it special from early.

Tigercats are a band from East London who make jagged and beautiful lyrical Pop music. Born from the glorious Esiotrot a few years back, their debut LP Isle of Dogs was released on Fika Recordings in 2012. Sounds XP said it sounded like a "bastardised Bo Diddley beat chained to an indiepop set up; part Orange Juice, part Hefner". The band's new LP is released via Fortuna POP on February 2nd. A Layer of Chips says it has a "measured brilliance and a pulsating pop heart". We've heard it and it's fucking ace. This will be the album launch, and the band have lined up a live brass section to shoot it to the moon.

Since Tigercats will be playing an extended set, there will be just one more band on the bill. This is Soccer96, a dreamy-sweet, mind-bending and hypnotic analogue synth and drum eulogy to when Gazza was in his pomp and Dennis Wise kept his hair simple.

Then at 10.30, Kerouac's bandanna will droop from a rusty propeller, tinting the lights for dancing at the disco bumper to bumper non-stop till 2am. The sounds of the sweetest, most fuck off indiepop, new wave, post-punk and riot grrrl meeting the ghosts of swing, rock'n'roll, Motown, Northern Soul, 60s garage punk, French Pop, and, of course, since it's New Cross, a generous sprinkling of Carter classics.

Call the glam rock cops.

Getting to the Montague:
The venue is directly between New Cross Gate Station and Queens Road Peckham Station, both of which are on the Overground (easily linked to on the Jubilee line - get off at Canada Water and it's a few stops away). They're also on the National Rail from London Bridge. It's is a 5-10 minute walk from either.
The Montague is also located on the 436, 36, 136, 177 and 171 bus routes. Jump off at Pomeroy Street and you're there.

Getting home:
If you're up north, the N24, which goes from just outside the pub, passes through Elephant and Castle, Aldwych and Holborn on its way to Tottenham Court Road; the N343 from nearby Peckham Rd goes through Elephant and Castle and London Bridge on its way to Trafalgar Square; and the N136 (Peckham Rd) goes through Victoria, Westminster, Trafalgar Square and Picadily Circus on its way to Oxford Circus, from whence you can get a further connection to most places. Barring that sleep at ours.

TIGERCATS
"They made a joyous noise and I just wanted to dance." (slatethedisco.com)
"This single could only be any better if it came with free drugs cellotaped to the cover." (Leeds Music Scene Review of Easter Island)
"Tigercats are the product of mating Hexicon with Esiotrot; the resultant sound is a bastardised Bo Diddley beat chained to an indiepop set up (part Orange Juice, part Hefner). They have songs about “Konny Huck” and Stevie Nicks, which should just sound sweet but have an angry intensity and buzzing loudness that makes them not only catchy but a lot more interesting." SOCCER96
"Lush chords follow gritty bass grind wonk til Kraut energy pushes into dreams. You are now ready for harmonious light beams and laser battles overhead." (SPECTRUM)
"Stripped-down, amped-up analogue synth vs live drum assault" (Wormfood)
"In the technology age artists can find their battle hard against the ephemeral nature of digital virtual reality using physical modes of expression like paint, clay, metal, ink, Mini-moog, Atari system?... some say these forms of art are obsolete, even the guitar perhaps is obsolete? Perhaps it has been for a while?... Soccer96 say balls to all that and tear it up with any piece of analogue equipment they can get their hands on." (Chin Stroker)
“My new favourite band” (Steve Lamacq)
“Fresh polyrhythmic electro with crisp live virtuoso drums” (Tom Robinson)
