With no clear signs of a new album for 2017, Grimes just dropped a playlist to keep her fans occupied, as she continues to work on new material of her own.
The playlist features all her latest musical favorites. It's a must-hear and features twenty-ones songs from artists as diverse as Cardi B, SZA, Mitski, Kali Uchis, Kelela, Taylor Swift and many more. There's even a song by Aristophanes, the Taiwanese rapper who was featured on Grimes' 2015 album Art Angels.
Grimes explained that her 'faé list' was a work in progress: "missing a lot of artists/ songs on here but I plan to rotate it semi regularly, and for now trying to stick to recent-ish releases songs I love.. tryin' to stick to independent artists, not always possible though, and generally artists who write or produce their own sh*t. Artists I feel a kinship towards in some capacity. It's a good energy for gaming or drawing in particular."
In her post, she goes on to explain that she's decided to create her own music genre because people keep asking about what her genre is. She's called it 'nu apocalypse subgenera' which sounds so like her! And she even wrote the first part of a manifesto:
"The fae are the children living at the end of the world, who make art that reflects what its like to live knowing the earth may not sustain humanity much longer. We live knowing that environmentally driven genocide is nigh, that the least equipped are to be struck down by the very earth itself. Repentance by the innocent for the sins of the rich. This does not mean that all fae art is directly about this, but that the influence of this reality is inescapable for the fae."
Regarding the new album and follow-up to Art Angels, we know very little except that Grimes has been working on it since last year and that it will be "slower and more reflective." She told V Magazine: "I'm really vibing on making something really slow and gorgeous that just breathes, and has room to breathe. I feel like my work has always been fast paced, kinetic, and almost just manic and I feel like for me the hardest thing I can do is make something that's slow and heavy."
And back in August, she told her fans on Instagram: "I know I've been quiet lately - in the studio every day trying to legit make something you've never heard before. Unexplored sonic landscapes. I need another month or 2 of pure unadulterated creativity at which point I will begin finishing tracks. Won't let u down."
