http://www.bbc.co.uk/proms/2008/whatson/2007.shtml#prom4

From the deep-rooted influence on Vaughan Williams’s music to the ongoing rise of young British folk musicians, this year’s Proms Folk Day offers the chance to immerse yourself in music, dance and storytelling.

With its ability to characterise a community, folk music offers a unique reflection of different cultures and traditions. Many composers across the centuries have taken inspiration from folk tunes, drawing their colourful scales and vigorous rhythms into the world of Western classical music.

Following the free afternoon concert exploring how folk music has influenced classical composers, Proms Folk Day’s evening concert focuses on artists who are continuing, reviving and reinterpreting the traditions of English folk music.

Tonight’s Prom presents a fascinating picture of the many directions folk music is taking, and includes appearances from Derbyshire-born singer Bella Hardy, guitarist Martin Simpson and the boisterous 11-piece big band Bellowhead – winners of three Radio 2 Folk Awards.
