Fifth and final studio album by American metal band Agalloch. Released on May 13, 2014 in the USA, followed by releases on May 16, 2014 in Germany and May 19, 2014 in the rest of Europe, The Serpent & the Sphere sees Agalloch take their progressive musical oeuvre to higher ground all while maintaining their classical sound revealing their darkest, most meticulously crafted and atmospherical surging work of their seventeen-year long career.
Captured by legendary producer and engineer Billy Anderson at Cloud City Studios in Portland, Oregon and mixed at Everything Hz, The Serpent & the Sphere represents the most glorious sounding Agalloch record to date. Also making a guest appearance by guitarist Nathanaël Larochette of Canadian neo-folk band Musk Ox who wrote and provided the acoustic interludes. The album received mostly positive reviews. Michael Toland of the Austin Chronicle described the album as, "One boot in balmy progressive folk and the other in frigid black metal" with "some of its prettiest, most haunted acoustic textures and heaviest, raspiest roars." Kim Kelly of Spin stated that the band's "blackened sound" is "more pronounced than ever" while describing the production as "impeccable: Agalloch have never sounded so rich, so full."
