He took early musical lessons from his father Ajit Chakrabarty, followed by Pannalal Samanta, Kanai Das Bairagi, and Pandit Jnan Prakash Ghosh. In 1969, he became a disciple of Ustad Munawar Ali Khan, a son of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. His daughter Kaushiki Chakrabarty is also a classical vocalist.
