“Not Today” is one of the last songs written for The Pains of Growing. It’s about the phase that precedes healing after the end of a relationship. It was released on Beats1 on November 13th 2018, 3rd anniversary of Alessia’s debut album, Know-It-All. In a video, she talked about the story behind the song: "It’s about capturing that in-between phase, and reminding myself that things do get better but it’s okay to just say “You know what? Not today. Today I need to be in bed, I need to be sad, and just throw myself a pity party.”
