Like many of the songs from Mutations, "Sing It Again" was a song written during the Mellow Gold era. Beck originally wrote it in 1994 when his music publisher called and said that Johnny Cash was looking for some songs for his new record. She suggested Beck write something for him and from this came "Sing It Again." However, it was never submitted because Beck thought it was "rubbish" (Cash did end up using "Rowboat"). Beck stumbled back on to "Sing It Again" when looking for songs to sing while opening for Bob Dylan on December 16, 1997.
