He has starred in movies since the 1980s, and played serial killer George Foyet on Criminal Minds. The song is a reference to his starring role in the 1986 comedy film Soul Man, in which Howell plays a white man who temporarily darkens their skin in order to qualify for a black only scholarship at Harvard Law School.
