It was originally recorded on 23 August 1946 during the same session as "Fool's Fancy" as "Bebop in Pastel". In the key of B-flat major, the tune is a "nonblues theme whose form is A-A'-B-A' with an eight-bar interlude that is not played during the solos." Earl Rudolph "Bud" Powell (September 27, 1924 – July 31, 1966) was one of the most influential pianists in the history of jazz. Along with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie he was instrumental in the development of bebop, and his virtuosity as a pianist led many to call him "the Charlie Parker of the piano".
