Chris Martin, the lead singer of Coldplay, announced the release of the EP during an interview with Steve Lamacq and R.E.M. singer Michael Stipe on 31 August 2008. The EP features several tracks left over from the studio sessions for Coldplay's fourth studio album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends.
