Biography
Cupid & Psyche is an indie rock duo based in Los Angeles, California, consisting of musicians Michael Vidal and Juan Velasquez. Their music is characterized by a blend of contrasting forces such as shadow and light, despair and hope, and frustration and catharsis. Both Vidal and Velasquez originally gained recognition as members of the punk band Abe Vigoda, whose 2010 album "Crush" received critical acclaim and was listed as one of the "Best 50 Albums of the 2010s" by Pitchfork. After a decade of pursuing separate paths, they reunited as creative collaborators. The idea of reuniting was born during the pandemic when both musicians were feeling uninspired. They decided to return to a practice room simply to experiment with creating noise. This unplanned reconnection led to a burst of creativity and ease, ultimately resulting in their debut album, Romantic Music, which was released on September 22, 2023, through the felte label.
Romantic Music reflects a broad range of influences from the 1980s and 1990s. The album encompasses elements of post-punk, goth, dream-pop, shoegaze, second-wave emo, and trip-hop, resulting in a unique and alluringly hypnotic sound. Notably, Vidal and Velasquez's guitars play a central role in their songwriting process, with lyrics typically developed after the guitar parts. This approach results in a seamless fusion of their guitar work, creating a sound that is often indistinguishable in terms of authorship.
