David Sylvian is an English musician/composer and singer. He came to prominence as lead singer of the band Japan. He went solo in 1984 with the album ‘Brilliant Trees’. His subsequent career has been characterised by artistic experimentation and imaginative partnerships with the likes of Robert Fripp (King Crimson) and Ryuichi Sakamoto (Yellow Magic Orchestra).

A regular collaborator since 'Brilliant Trees' is German bassist Holger Czukay, co-founder of the group Can. Apart from the contributions Czukay made to 'Brilliant Trees' the duo they recorded a pair of part-improvised instrumental albums - Plight and Premonition (1988) and Flux and Mutability (1989).
