Davie Jones (born David Robert Jones, 8th January 1947) was the early stage name used by David Bowie from 1964-1965. Bowie used this name in his time with early groups The King Bees, The Manish Boys and The Lower Third. Jones (whose name was also spelled Davy Jones on releases and promotional material alike) soon changed his name to Bowie to avoid confusion with artist Davy Jones of The Monkees. Bowie renamed himself after the 19th-century American frontiersman Jim Bowie and the knife he had popularised.
