The Doctor Who theme was composed by Ron Grainer and realised by Delia Derbyshire in 1963, and used, with minor alterations, until 1979. Grainer barely recognised the finished version as his own work: "did I write that?" he said. Despite the electronic nature of the music, no synthesizers were used in its creation - Delia hated them, and retired from the electronic music scene when they became widespread in the 1970s. Instead, she used oscilloscopes and tape minipulation to create the Doctor Who theme.
