Biography

Dry Ice was a band from Southern California. They were together from 1965 to 1972. The members included Steen Brydum (lead singer), Carsten Brydum (bass), Mike Eger (lead guitar), Dave Maddux (rhythm guitar), and Randy Hayes (drums). Steen and Carsten are brothers, born in Copenhagen, Denmark. The other three were born and raised in Southern California.

Dry Ice was a fairly well-known band in Southern California at the time. They played local clubs, concerts and other venues. The band appeared twice on network TV on "The Happening" show on ABC in 1969. That was also the year that the band recorded their fuzz guitar-laced anthem to summer, the now resurgent song "Land of Summertime".

The band had a friend named Don Malena who was a local singer/songwriter. He asked Dry Ice to record a couple of songs with him (including Land of Summertime). Don wrote the song and sang lead on the track, but the band created the arrangement and played all of the instruments. Steen and Dave provided the harmony vocals. (Sort of like The Beatles recording with Tony Sheridan in the early 60s). The band recorded some additional songs in the studio without Don Malena, but they were never released.

In 1998, "Land of Summertime" was included in the compilation CD "A Fistful of Fuzz" published by the New York label Digital Music Transcendence (DMT). In 2013, the CD was re-mastered and re-released on the UK music label Particles.

By the way, the band's name was "Dry Ice" not "The Dry Ice". The "the" was mistakenly added by the Mal-Don label when the 45 of "Land of Summertime" was pressed.

Dry Ice broke up in 1972. Carsten later joined the band Kixx Music, recording an album in the early 70s. The other band members went on to other careers. Currently, Carsten owns his own business in advertising/graphic design. Steen runs a computer service business. Mike and Randy are happily employed in their respective business ventures. And Dave works as a guitar guru at Fender, where he has worked ever since he left Dry Ice.
