On “Down Bad,” Dreamville artists JID, Bas, J. Cole, and Johnny Venus of EARTHGANG enlist the help of Young Nudy to rap about a time in each of their lives when they were dealing with difficult life situations. They used rap as an escape from their predicaments, and have consequentially attained wealth and success.
This song was first previewed by Barry “Hefner” Johnson in the early hours of January 8, 2019.
The song was further teased during a concert on February 17, 2019.
EARTHGANG teased the song’s imminent release in a since-deleted tweet on June 11, 2019.
Although the song’s instrumental is reminiscent of Public Enemy’s 1987 track, “Rebel Without a Pause,” a representative from Dreamville told Genius that it is not a direct sample.
