It was written by Maurice White, Philip Bailey and Larry Dunn and produced by Maurice White and Charles Stepney. The song blends funk, progressive soul and disco and runs approximately 2 minutes 50 seconds. It reached number 1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard Hot Soul Singles charts, becoming the band’s first crossover hit.
