Probably one of the most beautiful pieces written by Gustav Mahler. The major theme is also known as the Alma (his wife and later muse of artistic Vienna) theme. On a musical level the admiration for the Wagnerian principles of endless melodies is incorporated in a brilliant fashion. Much like the Tristan und Isolde opera where only at the last instance the melody is brought home.
