Biography

John Howard & The Night Mail
(First album release August 21st, 2015, Tapete Records)

In 1975 CBS released “Kid in a Big World”, the debut LP by 21 year old singer songwriter John Howard. But between glam and pub rock, it fell through the gaps.

Forty years on, Canterbury-based/Vienna-born pop writer and musician Robert Rotifer enticed Howard back to England from his Spanish exile to play his first London gig for seven years and begin work on the collaborative project John Howard & The Night Mail. Apart from Howard himself on vocals and piano and Rotifer on guitar the band features Andy Lewis (Paul Weller's bassist, DJ and Acid Jazz regular) on bass and mellotron and Ian Button (Papernut Cambridge, ex-Death in Vegas, ex-Thrashing Doves) on drums.

Apart from the Roddy Frame cover “Small World”, Lewis, Button and Rotifer are sharing all the writing credits with John Howard.

Howard first returned to writing and recording after several years in 2004, following the reissue by RPM Records of his debut album, and since 2005 has released a number of self-written studio albums. His 2014 live album "At The Servant Jazz Quarters" first showcased the line-up of Button on drums, Rotifer on guitar, and Lewis on bass. It was following this show that the four of them started writing songs together for what became 'John Howard & The Night Mail'.
