Born in San Jose, Costa Rica, Juan Carlos Ureña began playing music as a child and started his artistic career during his college years. At the age of 17 he traveled to Havana, Cuba, where he represented Costa Rica in his first international concert with nueva cancion pioneers Silvio RodrÌguez, Pablo Milanés, Mercedes Sosa and Chico Buarque, among others.
