The Refusal was first performed at Metro City, Perth on 15 April 2011, and was subsequently featured at most shows on the band's 2011 and 2012 tour. On 19 May 2013, a studio version of the track was premiered on Triple J's new music program 2013, and was made available for free download the following day. It is the first taste of the band's upcoming third album, due for release in 2013.
