It was recorded in concert on July 13, 1991 Vienna Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), in Vienna. Like much of Jarrett's work, Vienna Concert is improvised, and it is broken into two long pieces. He is considered one of the most important jazz pianists, renowned for his elaborate solo improvisations.
