Phil Elvrum described Clear Moon as the lighter of the two albums. The album was recorded between October 3, 2010 and January 7, 2012 in Anacortes, Washington. Elvrum cited Burzum, Terry Riley and Steve Reich as influences on the album.

Mount Eerie represents the latest evolution of Phil Elverum's musical vision. Formerly known as The Microphones, Elverum began Mount Eerie in 2003, maintaining his previous project's subtle, lo-fi, and lyrically dense fuzz-folk aesthetic.
