After his education at Edinburgh University, he followed postgratudate studies with Edward Gregson at Goldsmiths College, University of London. He holds a PhD in composition. After working in New York City as a freelance composer/arranger and music editor for the Salvation Army music bureau, Graham returned to England to take up a job as composer/arranger for BBC Radio and Television.
