“Paterson & Leo” was first released on the deluxe re-release of Pinegrove’s 2016 album "Cardinal". The song was also included on the band’s 2018 project "Skylight".
The lead singer, Evan Hall, explained the meaning of the song in an interview with NPR:
" love with a little bit of a caveat maybe; it’s like these people do love each other but they’re embarrassed about it We love all sorts of things but maybe feel embarrassed about it for some reason and this person is maybe stepping slightly outside of their comfort zone to express this type of platonic love for their friend."
During a live performance, Evan explains the background behind the song:
"There’s a very good thrift store in Patterson, NJ, and I went there one day and before I went in, I smoked weed. Then afterwards, I decided I was too high to drive, so I walked around for a little bit. It was at sundown and I wrote this song in my head, which sometimes I like to do, or rather sometimes it happens to me and I’m scrambling to catch it. I got home I sat down with a guitar and it turned out to work."
