“My Name is Mud” is a tale about killing a man with a baseball bat, sung by a narrator nicknamed Mud. The title is a play on the phrase “Your name is mud,” which means to be disgraced or unpopular. Though the phrase may have earlier origins, since the mid-19th century it has been associated with Dr. Samuel Mudd, the physician who helped John Wilkes Booth after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.
