Biography

The Fall and Fall are Adam Yates and Paul Turner. Adam does the production, sorts out the beats, creates tunes and backing tracks. Paul does the vocals, plays most of the instruments which are predominantly guitar, bass and keyboards. Sometimes they demo stuff separately and then work up the end result but equally stuff is created from scratch as ideas get developed in the studio.

Before Fall and Fall, the pair were in Skank Thing – a long time project that started with a full blown live band that made its way onto Channel Four’s ‘The Word‘ but over time whittled down to the two with additional input from John Yates. Over a 12 month period from 2010 to 2011 this later version of Skank Thing produced three albums of 36 tracks each, the last of which ‘Aftermath‘ set the path towards the birth of a new project which became The Fall and Fall.

As all this was unfolding, we revisited certain old classics that had inspired in the past to help us shape the future, fundamental to the rise of The Fall and Fall of England project was Deltron’s 3030. We wanted to create something as soundscapey and epic, with a narrative that could take you through from start to end on a subject that we felt was important. So with the 3030 template in mind, we set about creating a series of cinematic hip hop and dub influenced tracks, we just needed a story….

After TFAFOE we looked at our next Fall and Fall project, after a diversion with a side project, El Schooner Chico, we started to work on ‘London‘. The ‘London‘ project was a long held wish to put together a collection of tunes that documented how, for those who were born and bred, the city influences our every day with events actual and imaginary. It’s a different beast to TFAFOE, less hip hop, more dub and certainly more guitar. It’s less political, more personal, and hopefully full of the textures that we hoped to reflect.

The next project touched back to the spirit of TFAFOE but introduced other elements. M25c as we call it, is more cinematic, the lyrics harsher than London. It’s like a spaghetti western played out by the forces of good and evil on the London Orbital. It’s current, still being written and recorded but we think it could be our best yet……
