in edit 72 I changed it back from "is" to "are". What I mean there is that the website does not prefer one or the other in general, and usually selects the one that is correct grammatically in the artists native country (so the "The Rolling Stones are" but "Foo Fighters is")

"were" is grammatically correct in British English in this instance. The Beatles were from the United Kingdom, so "were" is correct here.

"are" and "is" are interchangable. "is" is used to denote plurals in North America, "Are" in the United Kingdom. As an international site, Last.fm does not out-and-out prefer one accent or dialect's grammar over the other.
