Biography

Meet the Jazztet recorded in 1960 is a hardbop fest of fun. Although the sextet is not an unusual aggregation, the lineup of performers is unique. There are two nods to Tin Pan Alley here; from the Porgy & Bess opera the Gershwin tune, It Ain't Necessarily So and the Cole Porter tune It's Alright With Me. An original by Benny Golson, I Remember Clifford showcases Art Farmer's mellow trumpet playing. Another Golson tune, Park Avenue Petite is a torrid affair which finds the sextet tearing it up - but ever gently so. The foot tapping Mox Nix is Farmer's contribution to the compositional chores. One other Golson tune, Killer Joe has been covered several times but the Jazztet's version is by far the best. The album features a young, up and coming McCoy Tyner in the lineup. All in all Meet the Jazztet is an album that will be played over and over again
