Born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, Bobby attended Point Park Junior College where he earned an Associate of Arts degree in Communications. In 1967, he began his career in radio at WAMO-AM (Pittsburgh). The following year, he moved to Washington D. C., was hired by the legendary R & B station, WOL-AM, and quickly became the number one DJ in the area.
