Born in Holland, Michigan, Vander Ark began playing bass at age 14. In 1990, he and his brother Brian Vander Ark formed the band Johnny With an Eye. In 1992, Johnny With an Eye disbanded, and Brian and Brad formed The Verve Pipe, along with drummer Donny Brown and guitarist Brian Stout, both formerly of Water 4 the Pool.
