my heart is a furnace, full of love that is just, and earnest. now we know that we must unlearn this, allegiance to a life of service and no longer answer to that heartless hay-monger, nor be his accomplice

The words "burden of belly" alone almost make me cry every time I think about them for longer than two seconds

Joanna's masterpiece. Yes, it's probably the most accessible song on Ys, but let's not give it pretentious hate because of that. Everything about this song is flawless. Joanna Newsom's vocal melodies evolve throughout the song to fit the song's situations. Her rhyme schemes are INSANE, lots of slant rhyme and multis. (For example, "My heart is a furnace; Full of love that's just and earnest. Now you know that we must unlearn this, Allegiance to a life of service, And no longer answer to that heartless Hay-monger, nor be his accomplice" where 'furnace' rhymes with 'earnest' and 'unlearn this' and 'service' and then slant rhymes with heartless and accomplice.. 'No longer' and 'haymonger' sneak in there as well). And the then the narrative, dark yet still very much an imaginative children's tale, rife with whimsy imagery. And then you got the backdrop courtesy of Van Dyke Parks hittin you cross the head. This song is 10/10 perfection.

The drowning part is one of the most haunting, the-hairs-are-standing-up-on-my-arms parts of any song I've heard.[4]

deep in the night shone a weak and miserly light where the monkey shouldered his lamp... [2]

For some reason I don't like the very beginning of this song but I love everything else about it.
