DeVol began his career in the late 1970s when he formed the band Orpheus with bassist Scott Earl and drummer Bud Burrill. This trio of musicians performed mostly at backyard parties without a vocalist, playing a hodgepodge of their own songs and covers from bands such as Black Sabbath, Rainbow, and Judas Priest.
