The Shaming of the True was, arguably, Kevin Gilbert's swan song. Due to Gilbert's unexpected death, Nick D'Virgilio was tasked with finishing the album and had to piece the album together from many sources of Gilbert's past. For example, "Certifiable #1 Smash" had only one full, live performance with vocals, as studio vocals did not exist. Kevin Gilbert (November 20, 1966 - May 17, 1996) was an American musician, born in Sacramento, California. He died at the age of twenty-nine. He was an accomplished instrumentalist and composer, who played keyboards, guitars, drums, bass and cellos, as well as singing vocals. His talents also extended to producer. He toured with Eddie Money before winning the Yamaha songwriting competition with his progressive rock group Giraffe.
