Lil Uzi Vert, born Symere Woods on July 31, 1995, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Playboi Carti, born Jordan Terrell Carter on September 13, 1996, in Atlanta, Georgia, are two of the most influential rappers to emerge in the late 2010s. Their genre-blurring music, blending elements of rap, trap, and punk energy, has contributed towards rage & cloud type beats.
The two artists first met early in their careers and quickly became friends, often hinting at collaborations. Despite both having different sound, Uzi's introspective, rapid-fire delivery contrasting with Carti's minimalist, ad-lib-heavy approach—their chemistry was apparent from their first collaborations. Such as Left Right (2015) & Of Course We Ghetto Flowers (2016) (feat. Offset) which the track originally featured A$AP Rocky.
Their friendship experienced both highs and lows. While their fanbases remained intertwined and eager for more collaborations, reports of tension between the two surfaced, particularly around 2020-2021. With Leaks such as SRT! & Cartier that was rumored to be on Carti’s upcoming album previously teased Whole Lotta Red which was scraped & turned to a new sounding project. During this period, both rappers pursued their solo projects with significant success.
As of 2024, Lil Uzi Vert and Playboi Carti remain two of the most influential and enigmatic figures in rap. While they have yet to officially release their collaboration album 16*29, they continue to influence the culture with their individual projects and remain close friends despite the challenges over the years. Fans remain hopeful that the long-awaited album will eventually be released, but for now, their collaborative history and impact on the genre are undeniable.
Both artists have teased new projects individually, with Carti hinting at a follow-up to Whole Lotta Red with his upcoming anticipated album I AM MUSIC or just Music. And Uzi working on more experimental music following the success of his third studio album, Pink Tape (2023) following Luv Is Rage 3 which hasn’t not been announced or released yet since 2023. Their relationship continues to be very strong & quiet as right now of being friends.
