He moved to Austin at age 6 and started playing guitar at age 13. His influences during his teens ranged from Nirvana, The Sex Pistols, The Beatles, Uncle Tupelo, Metallica and Guns N Roses,to Leonard Cohen, Mark Lanegan, Johnny Cash and Townes Van Zandt.
