Nicola Coforto (born Naples, 25 Sept. 1718; died Madrid, 16 March 1793). Italian composer. He studied at the Conservatorio di S. Maria di Loreto in Naples, where his first opera, La finta vedova, was staged at the Teatro dei Fiorentini in 1746. He then worked in various Italian theatres including S. Carlo, where his Antigono, to a libretto by Pietro Metastasio, was given in 1750. Between 1752 and 1754 he wrote two operas and two serenatas, at Farinelli's instigation, for the Spanish court; these were so successful that he moved in 1755 to Madrid as court composer.
