Gabunia studied piano and composition at the Moscow Conservatory (1957-1961) under Alexander Goldenweiser and Aram Khachaturian, in 1962 he returned to the Tbilisi State Conservatory. As a composer, Nodar Gabunia preferred to work in the Chamber Music and Symphonic genres.
