According to the Headlong Flight Songfacts, the origins of the song lay in an Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee jam. A year later, they assembled the song from the jam. It was originally intended to be an instrumental with the title of 'Take That Lampshade Off Yo Head!', but some lyrics Neil Peart had written, matched the instrumental perfectly, so they fitted the two together and changed the title.
