Sports Scenter grew from the ashes of a number of failed San Francisco bay area groups. The short lived "Ass Council", and the slightly longer lived but still ultimately short lived "Witches of Breastwick". Sports Scenter initially made an electronic debut with roughly six songs. Around three to five tapes were made for friends. Sports Scenter abandoned the electronic approach, favoring a more guitar and tune based song format.
