According to the Darlin' Songfacts, this was originally written in 1963 by Brian Wilson as "Thinkin' 'Bout You Baby," a record the Beach Boy mastermind produced for Sharon Marie, a girlfriend of Mike Love's. A few years later Wilson resurrected this song, re-wrote it with Mike Love and it was re-titled "Darlin'.
