The Cubby Creatures were born out of San Francisco's Mission District in 1997, becoming the musical arm of a cult-like art group called the Cubby, which is also the name of the group’s guiding principle / higher power. Jol and Brian formed the group with Emily on violin, Karl on clarinet, and Matt on drums. Matt quickly left the group and was replaced by Jason. Bill was asked to play the lead role in the Cubby Creatures' 1998 rock opera, The World of Tina, and soon after was asked to join the group on keyboards.
