Pure and beautiful. Sure, this seems somewhat out of place here, seeing as it doesn't touch on the album's overarching political themes. We could argue that the Mekons are hinting at the personal being political: perhaps they're presenting romantic desperation as an analogue to their political desperation. The political institutions that came closest to embodying their ideals have crumbled, and they're left as wild and blue as the song's subject. Ignoring this metaphorical reading would be silly, I guess--though it would be at least as silly to take it very seriously. This song is a respite--an early respite, but a respite nonetheless--from the despair and exhaustion of dealing with the fallout of the Cold War. Its traditional instrumentation and song construction go down easy, and Sally Timms's singing, which strips the song of its melodrama, is soothing. The political tumult of the period recedes, and we're focused on timeless, commonplace concerns. Pause and enjoy.
