I can't believe they're back. I mean I really can't believe it. I wonder if they'll tour.

Should've checked before commenting. They're already touring on the east coast. I missed this. Hopefully they'll tour in 2023 too.

Their new album is called "Nostril Milk from the Red Heifer: the Galloping Babel of Shoutboxes"...it's going to be some proper post rock, no mistake, and because they are Jewish, it will also be Klezmer.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a bit of healthy discussion, in fact it should be encouraged. That is unless you actually enjoy reading soundbites like "overrated", "underrated", "post-gaze", "sooooo good" or "hipster blah" ad infinitum.

yes. for those of you who don't know: this band does not make klezmer. it's hipster-friendly kind-of-yiddish indie folk blah.

Black Ox Orkestar are one of my favorite bands, but I can't stress clearly enough that this is NOT Klezmer. Klezmer consits mostly of dance songs and lively instrumental pieces for weddings and other celebrations. The bands music is also close to a lot of traditional Cretan folk music by "sound", but they predominantly play European Jewish folk.

Very different kind of Klezmer. Would love some recommendations. All I could find was very cheery stuff, nothing as dark and bleak as this. Would love some more stuff like this.

As an avowed fan of post-rock (as it's traditionally applied to bands such as Do Make Say Think or Mono), I say don't ban the tag, ffs, but use it sparingly and judiciously.

Who gives a shit what classification people think they are under... theyre associated with a lot of post-rock bands most likely because theyre on the same label. Theyre good music and thats all that matters.

agreed with tsintskaro, not even close to post-rock, even if they come from a postrock background or not.

Post Rock is a bad enough tag for bands like Mouse on Mars and Tortoise, bands that don't have anything in common with Black Ox Orkestar. Hrafinn you seem to have thought about more than most who have applied the tag, though I think for the most part it is being used by people who don't listen to a lot of music outside of the indie scene and its fads. I have a really good set of CDs of pre and post war music from the Jewish community in Eastern Europe, Palestine and the USA, and there are tracks on there that are not far from BOO's sound, but I wouldn't dream of labelling them post-rock. It could be construed as odd or avant garde to modern ears, but the music was made by people who weren't even considering those labels, they were just playing with what they had. I don't get the impression that Black Ox Orkestar want to be a rock band at all, so post-rock doesn't really work. Pre-rock is probably more like it, but lets not go there.

The musicians come from a post-rock background (and I like to think I can hear some a silver mt. zion resonating through at times). Especially the doublebass by Thierry is very distinct. It is a good synthesis of post-rock/experimental and klezmer elements. Like bands such as [artist]The Cracow Klezmer Band[/artist] or [artist]Kroke[/artist]; those are both (avantgarde) jazz and klezmer, not either specifically.

Yes,Post Post-Rock can be anything. But actually,is there enough tradition in it,to be straight up Klezmer?I don't know much Klemzer but they seem to bring in alot of their influences and the stuff they have been doing in the past into the mix. But yes,it's mostly based on Klezmer and them exploring their religious and spiritual roots.

It's kind of a shame that I have to be in the right mood for this band, because they're really quite lovely. It's also a shame that we'll probably never hear from them again. Fickle Canadians...

There're lots of cool bands on Constellation but that's not the best that's sure

They're a Yiddish/Jewish Folk group. But, regardless of what they are, they're great!
