Spotify’s highest setting (Ogg Vorbis 320kbps) is basically indistinguishable from lossless codecs (FLAC, etc.), and 1. I doubt anyone can tell the two apart even with the best equipment and 2. certainly not in a car, with phones (and over Bluetooth, which compresses audio itself), or gear most people use or can afford. You’d need high end headphones, with equally high end DA amplifiers to even begin to notice. In any event, Spotify pays their artists basically the same as industry peers, as evidenced in a link I wrote above.

In my experience, with some medium quality headphones and a DAC, Tidal sounds noticeable better. But Youtube Music sounds pretty good for me too (even I've considered quitting Tidal and keep only YTM). But Spotify sounds too compressed for me. Maybe I have some compatibility issue on my devices with OGG (Tidal and YTM use ACC). About artists pay, I read several articles about Spotify being the one who pays the less, although I haven't read anything in the last year. I have bought some albums in Bandcamp to support some specific artists, but I agree it's quite expensive for a digital platform.

every time I listen to their stuff I end up asking myself how it was possible for a band like them to exist

The ABC are pulling the catalogue off Spotify which kinda sucks but understandable.

am I seeing this right? less than 30k listeners for a band everyone and their dad cites as an influence? for a band with a really passionate fanbase that I see everywhere on the music internet?

Spotify counts for a depressingly large number of people's scrobbles and since their back catalogue was only on that platform for a short time this counts a lot for their low listener count here. Also they will probably forever be criminally underappreciated despite their enormous influence on a lot of hugely respected bands, much like Sparks.

don't listen to them all at the same time, try listening to them one-by-one. Hope this helps
