it's a shame lots of people are missing out his best work only because it's not available on album format. of course, some of his post-bop albums are extraordinary, and it's quite impressive that ha managed to stay avant-garde for so many decades, colaborating with Mingus and Coltrane, etc. but his best contribution to the world is swing. listen to the blanton-webster band and enjoy some delicious tunes.

Agreed, I've been listening to his work in order this week. Navigating all the albums in order is an absolute nightmare. Regarding the early work it's obvious traditional jazz/blues/ragtime, but there's really something different to and could tell there was an effort to push the genre forward. I've just listened to Rude Interlude and it's simply incredible

Far East Suite is still his masterpiece and one of the greatest concept albums in jazz history

also Duke Ellington and His Kentucky Club Orchestra, Duke Ellington & His Cotton Club Orchestra, etc. The distinction makes no sense since most of what's tagged just as Ellington is also with his orchestra. Sadly they won't get merged

@twajjo What the hell are you talking about? The site's not without its flaws but the scrobbler works fine except when there are technical issues, which happen with every website/program/app from time to time. Anyway, I can't say enough great things about Duke Ellington. It would be almost impossible to overstate Ellington's importance to Jazz/American music. I would say that he's the best American composer of the 20th century, possibly the greatest American composer of all time, and very likely the most important musical figure of the 20th century as well. His significance as one of the first black composers/musicians to be recognized as a great artist is imperative, too. He made masterpiece after masterpiece and incorporated countless styles of music into his own work, always retaining his own personal style and vision. If there were a Mt. Rushmore for American music his would have to be the first face to be chiseled into its side.
