I really like Travels With Myself and Another but I think after those 2 albums everything they have done has been pretty weak. Shame because there was so much potential with this band but they were much better with Kelson in the band. Unfortunately Falco got married and happy and that's never good for a band's music haha

I know this is like two years old but that last sentence is just crappy. In many interviews Falco talked about how he's someone to be inspired and write music when he's in a good mood and doesn't quite get behind artists that need to be miserable to write good music. IIRC Jon was one of those and it was one of the reasons it didn't work out with mclusky, Falco had to motivate him to even get out on stage and play at some point. I also disagree that it's been going downwards, there's been a steady stream of bangers and ear worms. The last FOTL album felt surprisingly heavy and dark on the sound and I loved that, it just made me wonder what the future holds. CF has always been a wonderful little thing. New mclusky with Damien in the band is going to slap everyone's tits clean off, I hope.

Fair enough, it's not as though I'm not wishing Falco well in life - I just didn't like the direction the band went in with the later albums. However, I'm a big fan of the Christian Fitness side project. Also saw Mclusky* live a couple of years ago and it was one of the best gigs I've been to recently. I didn't know they were going to make music too, if so I look forward to that.

It is not really about the standard of bass playing. I just think Kelson brought a different energy to the band in terms of humour, backing vocals and overall aesthetics. Not really a big fan of the first Mclusky album so I agree that he had an amazing 4 album stretch :D have you listened to his Christian Fitness material though? From what I've heard I think it's better than the latest FOTL but I have not listened to the newest stuff yet.

agree with you here IWBA. first mclusky album they had not found their feet yet. mclusky do dallas is one of my fave albums ever though. travels is a "good" album but the cracks are certainly starting to show on that one. and christian fitness is indeed far superior to any subsequent FOTL stuff

mclusky do dallas is one of my fave albums ever too - every song on that album is incredible. The first half of the 3rd mclusky album is on par with that album too imo - in particular the first 3 songs. 'That Man Will Not Hang' has the most amazing guitar out of any song from any Falco project. I'm actually a massive fan of 'Travels', love the whole album start to finish and actually think it's on par with the debut FOTL. But as soon as Kelson left and Julia joined the band - their sound completely changed! It's like listening to a different band :/

I'm going to jump in on this conversation here. I'm a huge Falco fan - pretty much every single thing he touched from mclusky to future of the left (with Kelson) appeals to me in a visceral way. Even those mclusky c-sides... literal music to my ears. However I find post-Kelson fotl to be incredibly hit or miss. It's certainly not due to Julia, she is amazing (beneath the waves an ocean is awe-inspiring). Rather my problem is with Falco's songwriting. IMO, post-Kelson he just let his lyrics go way too far in the contrived, lyrics-for-lyrics' sake direction. Many songs became backseats to his lyrics (eg: singing of the bonesaws, which everyone loves but is by far my least favourite song of his). I thought he could do no wrong lyrically, but it turns out (for me at least), all that time he was balancing on a fence and he finally tipped over.

new to this band but peace & truce is pretty awesome. Loving the lyrics and tempo-shifts!

oh does anyone know what he says in that part of the male gaze, "I've got my father's eyes and _______?" sounds like "milkman's soul" but that can't be right ._.

Does anyone know what Andy says in "French Lessons" in the part that goes "well I don't need _____ swimming 'round feet?" Can't find the lyrics online, and I really hope he's not saying what I think he's saying.
