“I never even thought about whether or not they understand what I’m doing… the emotional reaction is all that matters. As long as there’s some feeling of communication, it isn’t necessary that it be understood.” - John Coltrane

“He was only really concerned about playing his music and growing as a musician, that’s all he thought about. He couldn’t be seduced by a woman’s beauty because he had already been seduced by the beauty of music, and he was loyal to his wife. Whereas for me, after the music was through, I was out the door seeing what pretty lady I was going to be with that night.” -miles davis on coltrane

Just starting to get into his work, his studio and live discography is so vast, if anybody feels like dropping their top 5 (studio and or live albums) here, so I can organize an order of listening, it would be much appreciated. I feel when I go in with a plan, when evaluating a large discography, I can better appreciate the music, as I am less scatter brained in how I go about listening. Thanks in advance, beautiful music.

Thanks for responding. His more Avant-Garde stuff please. I am newer to Jazz but not dense music or material, so I would love to jump in the deep end so to speak.

sure! coltrane broke new mold in the avant-garde/free jazz world by emphasizing passion and feel over melody and traditional harmonic sensibilities. his later recordings are extremely intense, spiritual, and chaotic. sometimes there is familiarity, sometimes its chaos. its all feel, though. it helps to go into this era of jazz understanding that Free Jazz was a movement to liberate freedom back to the musician. modal and hard bop jazz are rooted in certain modes and frameworks. free jazz was liberating by prioritizing feel and spirit over everything else. **** for albums, try this order to approach his experimental years: Live in Comblain-La-Tour ( 1965), Coltrane Live at the Village Vanguard Again! (1966) , The Olatunji Concert [1967] (extremely intense!)

if this stuff is too far out to approach yet but you want to understand the depth of Coltrane's vision, i honestly encourage you to check out his earlier, more influential records on Atlantic/Blue Note first. Giant Steps, Blue Train, Coltrane's Sound, My Favorite Things - all incredible LPs and offer a lot of context to his vision. he wanted to push all boundaries and let the Divine speak through his instrument through music as the medium - and his later stuff i would say certainly achieves that! but having some context of his earlier stuff helps to appreciate it all on a level field

He is the GOAT. What other candidates are there? On any song where Miles and Coltrane colabs Coltrane sounds like he has arrived with a time machine from ten years into the future to show everyone else how to play.

Parker is probably the only other player I would consider so fair point there. Still, your anecdotes compare young Coltrane to mature Parker which isn't fair. Coltrane developed alot during his careeer.

If by GOAT you mean greatest of all time not just among saxophonists, Duke Ellington would be a strong candidate too as far as I'm concerned.

Even if John Coltrane is probably my alltime favourite and personally my most admired musician of all time too (not just jazz, but music in general). The way he lived and embodied music no one's ever done before or after.

"There is never any end... There are always new sounds to imagine; new feelings to get at. And always, there is the need to keep purifying these feelings and sounds so that we can really see what we've discovered in its pure state." -- John Coltrane

"In short, Coltrane's tone is beautiful because it is functional. In other words, it is always involved in saying something. You can't separate the means that a man uses to say something from what he ultimately says. Technique is not separated from its content in a great artist." -- Cecil Taylor

"Jazz is a word they use to sell our music, but to me that word does not exist. It is music." -- John Coltrane

The only correct and acceptable religion is the one that worships John Coltrane as the living incarnation of god, because yes.

John Coltrane was when humanity peaks. All of human activity afterwards has just been a footnote in comparison
